COWRA 
Septic Installer School 2023

 

COWRA will be holding our 2023 Installer School virtually online, due to COVID-19.  Classes will be on the Zoom platform on consecutive Thursdays from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. Before classes begin, a tutorial on connecting online will be available to students, including a practice run. Class dates are Feb. 16, 23, Mar. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30th, 2023. Students enrolled in the Installer School are automatically enrolled in the Pumper / Cleaner School, as the Pumper / Cleaner information is part of the 2023 Installer exam.  

Topics included are Septic Tanks: design, structure, function; Watersheds and drainage profiles, Soils: physical characteristics, profiles and types, identification; Site Conditions: deep hole and percolation testing, plumbing and pipe configuration; Distribution Systems; Leaching fields; trenches, dry wells, galleries; Curtain Drains; Biomat; Septic Failures; Transit work and surveys; Septic Design: MLSS, plans and sketches, forms, etc. 


The school will cover all sections of 19-13-B103 and 19-13-B100a of the CT Public Health Code, Technical Standards and the Design Manual for subsurface sewage disposal systems. Example questions of the type encountered on the installer’s exam will be covered. Practical exercises will be assigned for class work and field encountered problems will be discussed.


Materials

Materials you will receive: updated CT Public Health Code 19-13-B103 & Technical Standards for Subsurface Sewage Disposal Systems (SSDS), Design Manual for SSDS, a Study Guide & other handouts. 

Students enrolled in the Installer course are automatically enrolled in the Pumper/Cleaner course.

 

Students will need: engineering scale ruler, calculator, pens/pencils, notepaper.

 

 

Cost: Members and member employees: $310.00. Non-members, $525.00

Please Note: In order to receive the membership discount on tuition you must be a full member of COWRA for 2022 and your 2023 dues must be paid prior to the first night of class.

Cleaner School 2023

 

COWRA will be holding our 2023 Pumper/Cleaner School virtually online, due to COVID-19.  Class will be on the Zoom platform on March 30th, 2023, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm. Before class begins, a tutorial on connecting online will be available to students, including a practice run.

Topics included are Septic Tanks, design, structure, function; Watersheds and drainage profiles. Outlet filters, Port-o-lets, etc. 

 

The school will cover specifically sections of the CT Public Health Code 19-13-B103 General Provisions (pages 5 and 6 in the code) and 19-13-B100a. as well as the Technical Standards Section V. on Septic Tanks (pages 28-32 in the code) Chapter 9 on Septic Tanks and Grease Traps from the Design Manual. There will be example questions of the type encountered on the State Cleaner/Pumper’s exam offered by DPH.  Practical exercises will be assigned for class work and field encountered problems will be discussed. The vast majority of the questions on the cleaner exam come from the parts of the code, the technical standards and the Design Manual.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Weather-related Class Cancellations:

If COWRA needs to cancel class due to weather, please call 860 636-8188 or 860 267-1057 after 1:30 PM on the day of class. If we are cancelling class, the message will be changed to state that class is being cancelled that day. If there is a general message at the numbers above after 1:30 PM then we will be having class that day.

Connecticut Onsite Wastewater Recycling Association Class Withdrawal Policy:

Students may withdraw from the Septic Installer Course or the Pumper Cleaner Course five (5) days prior to the first day of class with a full refund of the class tuition.

Students may withdraw after the first night of the Installer Course for a partial refund, after the cost of the study guide and partial class fees are deducted. Students withdrawing after this first class must notify COWRA by phone or email prior to the second class and must send a formal request in writing within fifteen (15) days.

 

There will be no refunds for Students withdrawing after the second night of class.

 

The Pumper Cleaner Class is a one-night course. Withdrawal must be requested five (5) days prior to the class by phone or email and a formal written request submitted within fifteen (15) days.
